2020 Q2 & Q3 Jobs and Hiring Report

Data points and Turing School updates around alumni job outcomes.

2020 Q2 & Q3 Jobs and Hiring Report

It goes without saying: 2020 has been a tumultuous year for everyone. At Turing School, we are still realizing and adapting to how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted our job and hiring outcomes for recent alumni and the entire tech industry. We chose to merge our Quarter 2 and Quarter 3 impact reports into one piece below to share the data and illustrate the programmatic adjustments we made in 2020 to ensure Turing alumni find fulfilling careers and are able to continue developing their technical skill sets.

In early March, Q2 started off with an immediate downward trend of job offers. Some of our job seekers experienced offers being rescinded, job posts removed, and ghosting from recruiters. The pandemic caused this trend and we know companies were trying to adjust to meet market conditions and realities. Even with a scarcity of available jobs and active hiring, we did see movement:

In 2020 Q2 Jobs Summary:

  • Two cohorts graduated for a total of 68 new alumni.
  • 35 Turing alumni accepted a job during Q2.
  • The median time to hire was 75 days from graduation.
  • Median starting salary of first time hires was $75,000.
  • If you are curious about a more detailed data breakdown you can download our self-reported Q2 2020 Jobs Report.

To support our job seekers, we launched Turing+ during Q2. Turing+ is a three-month, paid fellowship for recent graduates to get started in the field with a position working on a software team at one of our partner companies. This program has been invaluable for students to continue to sharpen their technical skill sets, build their portfolios with real world projects, gain confidence, and build a new network to support them in their career.

As Q3 wrapped at the end of September, we were pleased to see an increase in both jobs and Turing+ fellows:

In 2020 Q3 Jobs Summary:

  • Two cohorts graduated for a total of 90 new alumni.
  • 43 Turing alumni accepted a job during Q3.
  • The median time to hire was 75 days from graduation.
  • Median starting salary of first time hires was $72,800.
  • If you are curious about a more detailed data breakdown you can download our self-reported Q3 2020 Jobs Report.

In 2020 Q3 Turing+ Summary:

  • 41 companies participated in Turing+ since March.
  • 69 Turing alumni are working in or have completed their Turing+ fellowship.

So, what comes next? Turing School is laser focused on expanding Turing+ and generating awareness of the quality of our graduates with companies around Denver and the entire country. We are also ramping up our external partnership outreach to ensure that our graduates know about technical jobs as soon as the company opens them up. We also hired two new career coaches, Su Kim and Martin McGovern, to support our graduates with customized job support, assessing strengths and providing resources at every step of the interview process.

We will continue to closely monitor our outcomes and the impacts of COVID-19 on the economy to ensure we are supporting our students and alumni to find fulfilling and competitive positions in the tech industry. Stay tuned to Turing Perspectives for more information about what that looks like and the Turing+ program.
